MORBO
Director: Gonzalo Suarez, 1972, 92 minutes, 1.37:1, color
Newlyweds Diego and Alicia set off for their honeymoon in a borrowed trailer. They plan to find a secluded spot in the countryside and spend some time alone together. Ignoring the “no entry” sign, they park up in a remote forest clearing, enjoying the silence and seclusion.
Strange things begin to happen around them. Alicia becomes obsessed with an old house in the woods that Diego claims to have seen. At the same time she starts to feel they are being watched by some invisible and malevolent force.
When they run out of water, Alicia insists Diego go to the house in the woods to look for a well. He becomes edgy and finally blurts out that the house does not exist. He just made it up to stop Alicia becoming scared of the isolated location.
After a furious row with Diego, Alicia decides to search for the house by herself. What happens there leads to a macabre and deadly encounter that she will never forget.
This long forgotten Spanish horror film is a welcome rediscovery. It conjures up an unsettling atmosphere of mystery and foreboding that lingers long in the mind after the film’s shocking conclusion.
